Essential Amino Acids for Dogs

Same like us humans, pets also have needs of supplements (especially as they age or have some chronically health issues) in order to keep their body processes running smoothly. Let’s have a look at them.

There are 10 absolutely necessary amino acids which are needed for dog’s body to make specific proteins effectively:

  • Histidine – helps to form haemoglobin; helps in growth, development and to protect cells from damage; good to regulate histamine and to control stomach health in terms of acidity regulation.
  • Isoleucine – helps to build muscles and repair tissues; also involved in production of hormones and blood sugar regulation.
  • Leucine – important in muscle protein synthesis and blood sugar regulation; helps maintaining a lean body mass and tissue recovery.
  • Lysine – helps to absorb calcium and plays an important role in growth and development, as well as collagen production and joint health.
  • Methionine – helps with liver detox and aids in preventing bladder stones.
  • Phenylalanine – needed to produce dopamine, which helps to regulate dog’s appetite, mood and behaviour.
  • Threonine – helps to improve immune system, digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  • Tryptophan – necessary for serotonin production.
  • Valine – needed for muscle development and nerve function and energy production.
  • Arginine – helps to maintain blood pressure and aids in wound healing.

Those amino acids normally obtained with food, but as the dog ages, stomachs acidity (production of hydrochloric acid) slowly decreases, making it harder to break down food properly and therefore getting necessary amino acids. therefore, it is very helpful to start adding some amino acids in a form of supplements.

Remember, that a healthy and diverse diet is one of the most important keys for dog’s health and longevity, same as for us humans. When the time comes to adding supplements, correct dosage and consistency is the key, since for amino acid supplements it takes some time for the body to start taking advantage from it.
