Asparagus in Dog’s Ration

Asparagus is high in Potassium, Thiamin (Vitamin B1), Vitamin A and B6. It’s a great vegetable for dogs with Kidney Disease and Ulcers.

Asparagus is safe to feed to your dog. But best is to feed your dog Well Cooked Asparagus, because if fed raw it is hard for GI of your dog to digest and can upset their tummies. Also remember that even as a treat, it can be fed not more than 10% from the total meal portion. Overfeeding can Upset Sensitive Stomach.

Raw Asparagus can be very difficult for your dog to chew. Independently Raw or Cooked, it should be cut before feeding to your dog in order to avoid chocking.

When cooking Asparagus for yourself, make sure to Avoid any Seasoning so you can give it to your furry friend. You can always season your Asparagus after cooking.

Also avoid feeding your dog Canned Asparagus, it can contain additives, like Salt, or Vinegar, or Sugar which are harmful for your furry family member.

Nutritional Values:

Asparagus is very high in Vitamin K which is good for healthy fur. Vitamin K is used in metabolise of Calcium into Bones. Due to such properties, it prevents Calcium Deposits in Heart, Arteries, and Muscles. Vitamin K also helps to make proper Blood Clotting and helps to prevent bleeding after surgeries.

150 grams of cooked Asparagus contains:

  • 38% of Folate
  • 24% of Vitamin C
  • 19% of Vitamin B1
  • 13% of Vitamin B2
  • 10% Vitamin B6
  • 9% of Vitamin B3
  • 7% of Vitamin E
  • 7% of Vitamin A
  • 6% of Vitamin B5

For Human Health:

As for us humans, Asparagus is extremely beneficial. Rich in antioxidants, it helps to keep our heart and vesicular system healthy, and our skin young. Due to a low calorie content, it also helps in loosing weight by promoting our Gut health. It also promotes Reproductive Health.

Asparagus Types:

There are three types of asparagus: white, green and purple.

– White is the most tender but has much less nutritional value;

– Purple is less fibrous and slightly sweeter than green. It has 20% higher sugar content than green asparagus.

Cooking Tips:

The best way is of course steaming. Short blanching is a healthy option too (put water in a pot, add juice of one lemon and let it boil. In a boiling water add peeled asparagus and blanch it for 3 mins. Then put asparagus right away in an ice cold water, this will help to stop cooking process and will keep nice bright color and crunchy consistency).

Mustard sauce (sweet Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, honey, salt, pepper and plenty of olive oil. Mix well and a perfect healthy sauce for asparagus (and other green salads) is ready.
