Salmonellosis in Dogs and Cats

We are well aware about danger of Salmonella and how it is passed on. But what we aren’t aware of, is that our immune resistance in comparison to immune resistance of our furry family members work a little different due to many factors.

According to FDA, Salmonellosis is uncommon in Dogs and Cats. But it doesn’t mean that they can’t be transmitters. Pets might show no symptoms, but still spread Salmonella in their stool and saliva and spread bacteria further around the household.

There should be no worries if you keep according to the rules of a a proper Hygiene and cleaning. Salmonella can be spread by Cats through shared Litter Boxes or when roaming on the surfaces that aren’t meant for their walking (kitchen counters, dining table, and sleeping in bed). Contaminated dogs can spread Salmonella by simply giving our kisses to your face.

Very important to wash your hands throughly every time you clean after your pet and to avoid them being on the surfaces which aren’t meant for them to be at (where you dine and sleep).

Briefly:

Main sources of Salmonella is a raw Poultry and raw Eggs. But if handled properly before serving it to your pet, it is safe. With Eggs in order to be on a safe side, make sure to wash them well before cooking and better serve them hard boiled. High temperatures help to kill Salmonella bacteria.

In addition, hard boiled eggs will actually benefit more to your pet due to its higher bioavailability. Raw eggs can be heavy on the stomach and therefore cause digestive problems.
